Rubin, Robert E.; Fitz-Gerald, S. J.: Foundations of Library and Information Science. 3rd ed. New York: Neal-Schumann Publishers, 2010.

The easy readable textbook is based on view of librarianship thats more related to social sciences, than to informatics. It focuses on applications of our subject in U.S.-libraries. On the pages 89 to 98 the author reports fairly about the "Library vs. Information Debate". Some chapters deal with trends concerning employment and profiles of LIS graduates as well as subject-matters and questions of library and information science. Other topics are: information processing and data formats; "Do we still need libraries in the age of Google?"; libraries and social developments; Management and organization; new roles for scientific libraries, e.g. in scientific publishing; digital libaries; portals; Web 2.0.; information behaviour; seeking information and information retrieval; man-computer interaction; usabiblity; bibliometrics; knowledge management; specialized information policy; freedom of information; informational self-determination; copyright and professional ethics for information and libraries - where the author holds the same opinion as the American Library Association

Lexika

Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science. ELIS. Bates, Marcia J. (Ed.) 3. ed. Boca Raton, Fla.: CRC Press 2010, Bd. 1-7. Lizenziert im Netz der HU

This comprehensive encyclopedia consists mostly of long articles about people, organizations and countries, written like handbook entries. The headwords partially sound like headlines. The encyclopedia has often been criticized for their selection of articles (like there is an article about "Digital Archiving", but nothing about "Digital Libraries"), for the priorities set (e.g. the article "Archives" deals mostly with archives in Australia), for not being up-to-date and for their meaningless illustrations.

Feather, John; Sturges, Rodney P.: International encyclopedia of information and library science. 2. ed. London: Routledge 2003.

This encyclopedia in one volume comprises detailed and extensive articles as well as brief definitions about people, organizations and countries. It can also be used as handbook, since the index alows a more systematic research.

Lexikon der Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft. Umlauf, Konrad; Gradmann, Stefan (Hrsg.). Lief. 1-. Stuttgart: Hiersemann 2009-.

The Encyclopedia intends to provide one-page articles or shorter definitions to mediate between theorie and practice over about 1000 pages in whole. There are about 100 authors from German-speaking countries involved, both working in universities or universities of applied sciences or as practitioners. It deals with therotical and practical terms of the subject and practically relevant terms of closely related disciplines, provides a list of relevant institutions, organizations, people and professions as well as a short list of historical terms.
