Information about the MA Programme in Library and Information Science



The Master's Programme at Berlin School of Library and Information Science is a consecutive programme. Its content is based on the Bachelor's Programme Library and information Science or related study programmes like infomation science, library and media management or documentation at universities or universities of applied sciences. It contains Library and Information Science studies as well as additional studies.


Academic Structure

The regular study period of the Master's Programme consists of four semesters, including a study phase and a completion phase.

The study programme is structured as the following:


Study phase

The study phase of Library and Information Science in the Master's Programme includes the completion of two obligatory modules, three optional modules, one project module and an internship:

Obligatory modules:
Module MP1: Information economy, information markets
Module MP2: Digital libraries
Optional modules:
Students need to choose 3 out of the following 8 optional modules:
Module MWP1: Management and history of library stocks, collections and collection items
Module MWP2: Bibliometrics, informetrics, scientometrics
Module MWP3: Information policy, ethics and law
Module MWP4: Theory of information research and transfer
Module MWP5: Business-related problems in the LIS-sector
Module MWP6: Communication and knowledge management
Module MWP7: Information and media management
Module MWP8: Long Term Digital Archiving (the lecture of this module is hold in english)

Furthermore you have to attend a project module (MPR) that is based on current research topics in the LIS-sector.

The internship provides an orientation for future fields of activity.

Additional studies offer knowledge about non-subject related or specialized practical knowledge.


Completion Phase

The forth semester is called completion phase, since it serves you to write and defend your Master's thesis.

For every module that has been completed successfully you will gain a certain number of credit points, according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

After the successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded with the academic grade "Master of Arts (M.A.)" in Library and Information Science.


Aims of the Programme and Professional Perspectives

To meet the expectation of the Berlin School of Library and Information Science to establish and further develop theories, methods and methodologies in Library and Information Science and practice, the Master's Programme aims to initiate further research on this subject and to support young scientists.

Possible fields of activities for our graduates are e.g., specialized libraries, media archives, publishing houses and information service provider or information management.


Begin of studies and registration dates

Matriculation takes place every year in wintersemester. The application deadline is 31 May for the following wintersemester. The number of students that can be admitted is limited referring to the Numerus Clausus.
