Universität Münster / COMSATS University | Pakistan

With the invention of the Internet, the role of university libraries has transformed from reading spaces of printed materials to centers of digital information resources and services. This study explores the evolution and history of university libraries in Pakistan. It also looks at the challenges for university libraries in the country. The study is primarily based on an extensive review of the published literature, personal observations, and author experiences, as well as some discussions with fellow library professionals. The findings depict that with the growth of universities in Pakistan, the number of university libraries has also gradually increased. University libraries in Pakistan are trying to offer up-to-date services to their patrons. Although there are challenges in terms of inadequate library collections, lack of funds, limited ICT facilities, and inadequate physical facilities, however, the condition of university libraries is far better than other types of libraries in Pakistan. There are also some good examples of modern university libraries in Pakistan which are comparable to libraries of the developed world. The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan is playing an effective role in the development of university libraries in the country. HEC also has many funding schemes for university libraries. As a result, the condition of university libraries in Pakistan has much improved over the years.
