Decentralized subject indexing: a case from television
Prof. Dr. Nils Pharo,
Department of Archivistics, Library and Information Science, Oslo Metropolitan University, Oslo, Norway
The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) in 2012 changed their indexing practice. Previously indexing professionals in the metadata section had been responsible for adding descriptive as well as content metadata on all television programs broadcasted by the channel. From 2012 metadata registration has been performed by production staff, i.e. persons related to the production of the program, supervised by NRK's archive and research department.
In order to learn more about the indexing quality under the new regime we performed an analysis of all terms (tags) used by the indexers during one week in October 2012. In addition five indexers were interviewed. The data has been analyzed according to facets. Seven mutually exclusive categories were identified. Other issues we investigated were the consistency of the used terms and indexers attitudes towards metadata registration. In this talk we shall look at the major findings and discuss some of the challenges raised by this kind of indexing.
