Certified Copies

The point of certifying a copy of a document is to prove that the copy is identical to the document from which the copy was taken without any changes. That way, one can give away copies of documents of which one only has one original (e.g., diplomas). The certification shows that a copy is legally valid, which German institutions tend to require when they hire staff or universities enrol students.

Certified copies must be issued by appropriate public authorities. That includes schools, universities, and notaries. The certification must include the official seal of the certifying authority (with a coat of arms) and a text that states something similar to:

“It is hereby confirmed that this text / translation (and the overleaf text / translation) matches the original.”
DATE / SIGNATURE

Simple photocopies/printouts made by means of a copy machine/printer, or simple photocopies/printouts of a certified copy will not be accepted, since they are no certified copies!
