Information about the MA Programme in Library and Information Science

The Master's Program at Berlin School of Library and Information Science is a consecutive program. Its content best builds upon the Library and Information Science Bachelor's Program or related study programs, like information science, library and media management, or documentation at universities or universities of applied sciences. It contains Library and Information Science studies as well as additional studies.

 

Academic Structure

The regular study period of the Master's Program consists of four semesters, including a study phase and a completion phase.

The study program is structured as the following:

 

Study phase

The study phase of the Master's Program in Library and Information Science includes the completion of two obligatory modules, three optional (elective) modules, one project module and an internship:

 
Basic studies consist of the following obligatory modules (70 ECTS):
 

Module MP1: Information economy, information markets (10 ECTS)

Module MP2: Digital libraries (10 ECTS)

Module MP3: Project Module (10 ECTS)

Module MP4: Internship (10 ECTS)

Master’s thesis and defense (10 ECTS)

 

For advanced studies you have to choose three out of the following eleven optional modules (30 ECTS):

 

     Module MWP1: Bibliometrics, informetrics, scientometrics (10 ECTS)

     Module MWP2: Information Behavior & Information (10 ECTS)

     Module MWP3: Information Law (10 ECTS))

     Module MWP4: Information Retrieval (10 ECTS))

     Module MWP5: Digital Information Services (10 ECTS)

     Module MWP6: Knowledge Discovery in Databases (10 ECTS)

     Module MWP7: Digital Information Infrastructures (10 ECTS)

     Module MWP8: Digital Curation (10 ECTS)

     Module MWP9: Web Science (10 ECTS)

     Module MWP10: Information Governance and Information Ethics (10 ECTS)

     Module MWP11: Management (10 ECTS)

Additional studies offer knowledge about non-subject related or specialized practical knowledge (20 ECTS).

Furthermore you have to attend a project module (MPR) that is based on current research topics in the LIS-sector.

The internship provides an orientation for future fields of activity.

Completion Phase

The forth semester is called completion phase (Thesis Phase, Research Phase), since it serves you to write and defend your Master's thesis.

Please note the Information on the defense of the master's thesis..

For every module that has been completed successfully you will gain a certain number of credit points, according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

After the successful completion of the program, you will be awarded with the academic title "Master of Arts (M.A.)" in Library and Information Science.

 

Aims of the Program and Professional Perspectives

The Master's Program aims to initiate further research in Library and Information Science theory development, methodology, and practice, by supporting young scientists.

Possible fields of activities for our graduates are e.g., specialized libraries, media archives, publishing houses and information service providers, and information management.

 

Begin of studies and registration dates

Enrollment takes place every year in winter semester. The application deadline is 31 May for the following winter semester. The number of students that can be admitted is limited referring to the Numerus Clausus.
